If you can smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or anyone has had a shock, ring 999 first. Then switch off at the fuse box if you can reach it safely, and ring us on 07840 429873 after that. Electrical fires move fast and the fire brigade would always rather come out to nothing.

For everything short of that, ring and you will get a straight answer on how soon we can be there. We are a small family firm rather than a round the clock call out company, and we would rather tell you that than have you waiting on a van that is not coming.

What counts as an emergency

• Burning smell, smoke or sparks from a socket, a fitting or the board. 999 first.
• Anyone has had an electric shock. 999 first.
• Total loss of power when the neighbours still have theirs.
• A board that will not reset with everything unplugged.
• Water reaching sockets, fittings or the consumer unit.
• Exposed or damaged cable anyone can touch.
• A socket or switch that is hot, discoloured or buzzing.

A single dead socket or a breaker you can reset yourself is not usually an emergency, and it is cheaper as a normal visit. Send it through and we will book it properly.

What it costs

Between 8am and 5pm an emergency call out is the same as any other visit: £80 for the first hour, which covers the call out, then £48 an hour. Out of hours is a higher rate, and you are told the rate when you ring, before anyone gets in a van. No VAT is charged on domestic work.

Before we get there

1. If there is any smoke, burning smell or sparking, get everyone out and ring 999.
2. Switch off at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely. Never take its cover off.
3. Unplug what is on the affected circuit.
4. If water is involved, do not touch anything electrical near it.
5. Ring us and describe what you can see. It decides what comes off the van.
