Electrical advice without the jargon

The questions customers actually ask, answered the way we would answer them on the phone. No jargon, no upselling, and where there is something you can safely check yourself before paying anyone, we say so.

Most of what comes through on a Monday morning is one of four things: a board that keeps tripping, a socket that has died, a fuse box that looks older than the house, or a nagging sense that the wiring is past it. The pages below cover all four, with what each one usually turns out to be and what it costs to put right.

One rule runs through all of it. If you can smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or anyone has had a shock, ring 999 first. Then switch off at the fuse box if you can reach it safely. Everything else on this page can wait until the morning.

Why does my fuse box keep tripping?

What to check when the board keeps going, the appliances usually behind it, and the point where you should stop and ring someone.

What it costs to get someone out

Labour is £80 for the first hour, which is also the minimum for any visit and covers the call out, then £48 an hour after that. Jobs of five hours or more are £48 an hour throughout. No VAT is charged on domestic work. There is no separate call out charge, the first hour covers it, and the price is agreed before any work starts. Bigger jobs get a free quote visit first, usually a Friday evening or a Saturday morning, because Louis is out on jobs in the week.

The full price guide lists what the common jobs come out at, and what we do covers each one in detail.
